Feeling anxious, depressed, irritated? Unless you have a friend, family member or acquaintance that you can turn to you may want to consult a therapist. I have been to a few in my time. As a result I’ve learned some things that I would like to share with you.
When you begin the sessions with your healer there are at least three criteria that s/he should satisfy:
Compassion:
A caring person who is a good listener.
Qualifications:
The healer should be appropriately trained. S/he needs to be able to employ a variety of remedial techniques depending on your requirements. Some of these methods include visualizations, hypnosis, cognitive and behavioral therapies.
Integrity:
A therapist needs to be honest about her/his limitations when consulting with you.
If s/he lacks the experience or qualifications to help you, or when experiencing a personal crisis, referral to another healer is appropriate.
As an individual you also have to take responsibility for your own happiness. Being willing to do the inner work required to change is often more important than the therapist. Such work is quite painful and not everyone wants to “go there”. Those of us who have walked this path will admit that it is well worth the effort.
It is important to remember that as a client paying for a service you have the right to walk away, or to ask for a refund if you believe you’ve been ripped off. Sometimes it is a personality clash that ends a therapeutic relationship. In any case, it is your choice. If you aren’t satisfied with the service, you can always shop somewhere else.
