Insomnia And Nightmares
You simply cannot escape poor sleep when undergoing PTSD especially when nightmares are added to the problem. This is inevitable when there are flashbacks of past traumatic events because they tend to come through in your sleep when the conscious mind is not in control (i.e. not able to protect you by blocking off such memories). Avoid taking sedatives during these phases as they will have detrimental effects in the long run. Use these tips to help you fall asleep even if it is for short periods of time because this is better than total sleep deprivation.
- Lavender oil
- Chamomile tea
- White chestnut Bach Flower Essence (preferably with the Rescue Remedy)
- Relaxing music or sounds of the ocean
- Visualize pale blue light enveloping you
Nightmares:
- Rescue Remedy
- Self-soothing techniques (give yourself a big hug, remind yourself of where you are and that you are in fact safe now)
